Sustainable Energy

Energy production and use affects almost all aspects of social and economic development. Cooking with inefficient and poorly ventilated stoves causes about 2 million premature deaths per year around the world. Each day around the world, hundreds of millions of people - mostly women and children - spend several hours a day hauling water and gathering fuel, an activity leaving them too exhausted to go to school or generate an income. Local air pollution, resource-damaging acidification and harmful greenhouse gas emissions are all directly linked to energy creation. Sustainable energy, therefore, has become a central strategic focus for UNDP — and a central challenge for Viet Nam.

Energy efficiency, conservation, accessibility

UNDP Viet Nam seeks to strengthen national policy frameworks supporting energy efficiency and sustainable development. UNDP Viet Nam’s programmes promote rural energy services and clean energy technologies for sustainable development. In addition to using its global networks to offer experience and expertise in these areas, UNDP also acts as a catalyst and intermediary to increase access to financing for sustainable energy.

UNDP Viet Nam, with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and other partners, also supports a range of climate change projects to combat global warming and preserve the fragile ozone layer. They focus on removing barriers to the adoption of efficient renewable energy technologies; promoting the use of sustainable, climate-friendly technologies and measures; and reducing the cost of these technologies.

UNDP Viet Nam is implementing two energy projects, with focus on energy efficiency in public lighting and energy conservation in small-business, which introduce new technologies and methods of energy management for broader adoption and use.

A series of smaller projects promotes energy efficiency, gender-poverty-energy linkages, and innovative technologies at the local level, for broader learning and replication.

In addition, two new proposals are being developed with Vietnamese counterparts to reduce methane emissions from rice paddies and promote energy efficiency for Public Buildings.
