Small Grant Projects
The Global Environment Facility (GEF)
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) helps developing countries fund projects and programmes that protect the global environment. GEF grants support projects related to biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, the ozone layer, and persistent organic pollutants.
Recognizing the vital role local communities play in environmental activities, the GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) was launched in 1999 in Viet Nam, now one of 140 countries benefiting from GEF support. Through targeted small grants, 74 projects have been approved in
Promotion of Tropical Forests
The regional programme "Small Grants Programme for Operations to Promote Tropical Forests " (SGP PTF) is funded by the European Commission and administered by UNDP. The programme is based upon and works closely with the Small Grants Programme funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF/SGP). The programme funds forestry-related activities in a total of eight Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet Nam in the period from 2002-2007.
This programme aims to empower forest people and the rural poor to maintain, reintroduce, and develop traditional sustainable forest management practices. The programme specifically focuses on alleviating poverty, increasing stakeholder participation, conserving biodiversity and complementing national initiatives on forest development.
In Viet Nam, the programme provides one-time small grants of up to EURO 65,000 for Vietnamese non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) to undertake projects to support and promote community forestry. The programme gives primary focus to the Viet Nam’s northern uplands region but there are also a number of projects in the Central and Central Highlands that displayed highly innovative ideas.
