Celebrate International Day for Biodiversity Day today

Ha Noi, 22 May 2013 - The theme for this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity is “Water and Biodiversity”. Water underpins the health of our ecosystem, and therefore biodiversity. As ecosystems regulate the availability of water, as well as its quality, conservation and restoration are vital activities to ensure water security. Water is life. It underpins our human well-being, including the security of our food, drinking water and sanitation, as well as most of our economic activities.

Part of the One UN Initiative

The One UN Initiative in Viet Nam is the United Nations response to the Government of Viet Nam’s call for a more effective UN. Launched in early 2006, the One UN Initiative aims to reduce duplication, improve coordination and make UN agencies work together more effectively and efficiently. This has led to greater impact in key development areas and better results for the people of Viet Nam. The UN Country Team in Viet Nam works “as one” to support Viet Nam in its development efforts. The UN’s support is outlined in the One Plan, the combined planning framework for all the UN organizations in Viet Nam, including UNDP.

UNDP plays a key role in supporting all areas of the One UN Initiative. For instance, UNDP is managing the building of a Green One UN House which will house, in one building, all resident UN agencies in Viet Nam.

Increasingly, the UN is also focusing on providing strategic policy advice. UNDP supports this by providing policy advice in the areas of rule of law, public administration and anti-corruption, climate change, and economic and human development.

UNDP in Viet Nam

UNDP has been in Viet Nam since 1977, when there was very limited donor and international presence. Since that time UNDP’s role in Viet Nam has evolved through the country’s many stages of transition, struggle and success.

At UNDP Viet Nam we continue to provide critical support in the areas of democratic governance and participation; inclusive and equitable growth; and sustainable development, climate change and disaster risk reduction. Our efforts to support Viet Nam’s development agenda are firmly grounded in the context of the One UN Initiative and the One Plan III, the consolidated programme of work of all UN agencies working in Viet Nam. 

In our work we continue to be guided by our principles of human development, equity and a human rights-based approach.
